SSMU doctors saved the life of a patient with Paget-Schroeter syndrome

Doctors successfully dealt with a severe case of subclavian vein thrombosis in a young construction worker, preventing serious consequences and returning the patient to a full life.

A 27 y.o. man went to a therapist complaining of a feeling of heaviness, bursting pain, swelling and discoloration of the skin in his right arm when performing physical exercises. The day before his visit to the doctor, he experienced a tingling sensation in the area of his right shoulder. After that, for four days, the patient did not stop doing physical labor. The examination revealed Paget-Schroeter syndrome or subclavian vein thrombosis, which could lead to serious consequences.

Urgent treatment began under the guidance of doctors at the Razumovsky State Medical University. The patient was hospitalized in the Department of vascular surgery, where he was diagnosed with an acute violation of the venous outflow of the right upper limb and prescribed anticoagulant therapy. After a short time, the condition improved and the man was discharged.

However, due to non-compliance with the recommendations and abuse of physical activity, the problem returned: the patient was re-admitted to the hospital. Additional studies revealed recurrent subclavian vein thrombosis, which led to the need for surgery.

The doctors performed a complex surgical treatment, during which they dilated the vessels and eliminated the cause of recurrent thrombosis. The man was able to return to normal life with further follow-up by a vascular surgeon.
